Welcome to Birrigai Outdoor School

Educating People for a Sustainable Future
Birrigai offers a range of dynamic, experiential day and residential programs that support curriculum needs, foster positive action for the environment and promote community awareness and responsibility. Catering for all ages, our trained teachers plan and conduct safe, challenging and inclusive activities throughout the ACT Region.

Pre school to Yr 12 students from both government and non-government schools are engaged in outdoor and environmental education programs that aim to expand their knowledge and understanding of their interactions with the Australian environment.

Following an experience at Birrigai students and teachers will have greater knowledge of the natural environment, value it as a fundamental aspect of their environment, and be aware of how human action is important to conserving and enhancing it.

Birrigai also offers accommodation and catering only to schools visiting attractions in the national capital. Situated next to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and Deep Space Tracking Station, yet only 45 minutes from the Parliamentary Triangle, Birrigai offers excellent facilities and service in a picturesque bushland setting with an abundance of native wildlife where teachers can rest easy, well away from distractions such as traffic and city nightlife.

Birrigai also offer unique programs for corporate team building with conference facilities, catering and accommodation.

Outdoor Education @ Birrigai

Birrigai delivers the majority of programs across 3 sites;

Birrigai @ Paddy’s River provides a residential facility (providing accommodation for up to 198 people) that is situated on 170 hectares near Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in the foothills of the Brindabella Ranges, 25 kms from the centre of Canberra. It is a facility of the ACT Department of Education and Training, and commenced operation in 1979.

Birrigai @ Jerrabomberra Wetlands
is situated on Dairy road at the Jerrabomberra Wetlands.  At this site programs focus on wetland ecology and sustainable agriculture.

Birrigai @ Australian National Botanic Gardens is situated in Acton.  At this site programs for early childhood focus on an introduction to environmental education.

Birrigai at Tidbinbilla – 2008
Tidbinbilla is opening the new ‘Sanctuary’ a world class wetland environment that provides an insight into the natural world.  Get a ‘duck’s eye view’ of the wetlands in the below water level weir, search for platypus along the boardwalk, scramble over the granite outcrops, see research in action at the Vet centre and get up close and personal with our reptiles.

In 2008 Birrigai will be working closely with Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve to establish education programs in the Reserve.  Birrigai is developing a range of exciting new learning programs including indigenous studies, wetlands, endangered species and early settlers’ history.
